Wallenpaupack Aims for a “3‑Peat” in the Pennsylvania Governor’s School Breakfast Challenge

Wallenpaupack schools are once again gearing up for the Pennsylvania Governor’s School Breakfast Challenge, and this year, the team is aiming for a three‑peat victory. As our district continues its strong commitment to student wellness, nutrition, and academic success, participation in this statewide program highlights just how impactful a healthy breakfast can be for learners of all ages.

What Is the Governor’s School Breakfast Challenge?

The Governor’s School Breakfast Challenge is a three‑month statewide initiative designed to encourage schools to boost student participation in Pennsylvania’s Universal Free Breakfast Program. The Challenge also recognizes schools that implement sustainable changes—such as incorporating more nutritious and locally sourced foods—into their breakfast offerings.

Schools across Pennsylvania take part each year, and the program focuses on ensuring that students start their day with the nutrition they need to be successful. The challenge encourages districts to:

  • Promote school breakfast to students and families
  • Offer breakfast options that include local foods and hot entrées
  • Limit high‑added‑sugar items
  • Innovate breakfast service methods to increase accessibility

In past years, Wallenpaupack schools have performed exceptionally well. In fact, multiple schools from our district— including Wallenpaupack Area High School and several intermediate and elementary buildings—have been recognized as top performers statewide.

Our Students Share Why Breakfast Matters

In the message shared by WAHS Food Service Manager Dana Anolfo, several students offered their own reasons for choosing to eat breakfast at school each day—showing just how meaningful this daily routine is to them.

  • Ashley, winner of the recent Fandango gift card drawing, shared that she gets breakfast every day because “the food is good, and it helps with brain power.”
  • Christian and Gavin, both athletes, said they participate because “it’s important to keep our body fueled.”
  • Leigha and Isabella enjoy having a hot breakfast in the cafeteria each morning.
  • Ruby and Lilly explained that mornings at home are busy, so knowing they can count on a hot breakfast at school—and enjoy it with friends—makes a big difference.

These student perspectives highlight one of the core truths behind the Breakfast Challenge: when students begin their day with a nutritious meal, they are better prepared academically, physically, and emotionally.

Why This Challenge Matters

Research and state data show that Pennsylvania’s universal free breakfast initiative has significantly increased participation, with schools statewide serving over 92 million breakfast meals last year—an increase of more than 11 million from the previous year. This rise reflects expanded access, stronger school engagement efforts, and programs like the Breakfast Challenge that encourage innovation and student-centered breakfast models.

The Pennsylvania Department of Education emphasizes that meeting students’ basic needs—starting with a healthy breakfast—is essential for learning. Schools that participate not only help students academically but also strengthen community support and encourage lifelong healthy eating habits.

Looking Ahead: Wallenpaupack’s “3‑Peat” Opportunity

With enthusiasm from students, commitment from staff, and a long-standing tradition of participation, Wallenpaupack is well‑positioned to pursue its third consecutive year of success in the Governor’s School Breakfast Challenge.

Families are encouraged to support the initiative by reminding students that breakfast is free, nutritious, and available every school day. Whether fueling athletes, boosting academic performance, or simply providing a warm start to the morning, school breakfast makes a measurable difference for our learners.
