Governor's School Breakfast Challenge

Wallenpaupack Area School District is participating in the second annual Governor's School Breakfast Challenge. The goal of this challenge is to increase participation in our school breakfast program by offering healthier options during breakfast service.

The School Breakfast Program is a federal program administered by the Pennsylvania Department of Education. All students in participating schools have access to a school breakfast, and schools are reimbursed for each student that receives a reimbursable meal.

Breakfasts like this are free to all WASD Students!

At Wallenpaupack the School Breakfast Program is FREE for all students every day.   We encourage every student to participate to ensure that they have the nutrition needed to succeed in the classroom. These meals meet federal nutrition standards and our staff is working to provide students with a variety of meal options.

To ensure that all our students are well prepared for academic success, we are pleased to announce that we are launching a "Grab-and-Go" breakfast program. In addition to offering breakfast in the cafeteria, breakfast will now be served from kiosks enabling students that did not make it to the cafeteria to receive breakfast. Instead of requiring students to get to school early for breakfast, it will now be integrated into the school day to increase convenience and student access to this important meal.

Studies have shown that offering breakfast in the classroom not only increases participation in the breakfast program, but it also can reduce absenteeism and tardiness, as well as boost academic achievement. Currently, with breakfast offered in the cafeteria, only 38% percent of our students eat school breakfast. We expect that this program will boost these numbers, making breakfast a key activity that allows our students to start the school day ready to learn.
