PHYSICAL EDUCATION

 

WELLNESS I - .5 credit                                                                                                           

Grade 9

 

This course is required of all 9th grade students. This course consists of the study of the following areas: health and wellness, stress, suicide, tobacco, communicable disease, including AIDS, fitness and nutrition; all in conjunction with leading causes of death. Physical Education is a review of skills, rules and strategy for a variety of team sports that include floor hockey, basketball and volleyball. The sport of lacrosse is introduced and the student is exposed to adventure education, track and field and outdoor team activities.


WELLNESS II/DRIVER EDUCATION - .5 credit                                                                        

Grade 10
Required: Wellness I

 

This course consists of driver education theory, related health issues and is required of all 10th grade students. Students may take optional "Behind The Wheel" driver training free of charge after school. A valid Pennsylvania driver permit is required. Students are introduced to a variety of lifetime sports, such as golf, archery, adventure education, boating, and water safety. In addition, a student continues to develop skills and strategies in team sports.

 

WELLNESS III - .5 credit                                                                                                        

Grade 11
Required: Wellness II/Driver Education

 

The student may choose to take Wellness III instead of Wellness III/Personal Fitness. This course consists of the following topics: community health, consumer health, violence reduction, marriage, parenthood and family life, aging, death and dying, and relationships. Wellness III students are expected to develop intermediate skills in lifetime, individual, dual and team sports and in adventure education.

 

WELLNESS IV - .5 credit                                                                                                       

Grade 12

Required: Wellness III

 

The emphasis of this course is fitness improvement.

 

The student may choose to take Wellness IV instead of Personal Fitness 12 or Holistic Fitness. This course is designed to emphasize lifetime activity development including a lifelong personal activity program to achieve physical fitness. Achievement will be reached through participation in the following activities: tennis, bicycling, in-line skating, lacrosse, ultimate team handball, volleyball, court hockey, and adventure education.

Improvement will be monitored and measured by use of heart rate monitors and various fitness testing techniques. All students will participate in CPR instruction and have the opportunity to become certified in CPR

 

PERSONAL FITNESS 12 - .5 credit                                                                                         

Grade 12
Required: Wellness
III

 

The student may choose to take Personal Fitness 12 instead of Wellness IV or Holistic Fitness. The student will develop his/her individual lifetime fitness through participation in non-competitive activities available in adventure education, the weight room and fitness center such as cycling, stepping, treadmill, weight training etc. An individual program will be developed for the student.

All students will participate in CPR instruction and have the opportunity to become certified in CPR.

 

HOLISTIC FITNESS - .5 credit                                                                                                

Grade 12
Required: Wellness
III

The student may choose to take Holistic Fitness instead of Wellness IV or Personal Fitness 12. This course is designed for the student who would like to participate in an organized program of cardiovascular activities for weight management combined with the study of diet practices. Activities will include aerobics, biking, fitness, walking, Pilates, uses of exercise videos and yoga. Topics include weight management, calorie intake, goal setting and prevention of cardiovascular disease.
