FOREIGN LANGUAGES
Each year of high school a student may select one or more credits of foreign language from available courses.
FRENCH I - 1 credit
Grades 9,10,11,12
Level: College Prep Challenge
The objective of the French I course is to develop basic mastery in the four skills of listening, speaking, reading and writing. Recommended for all 9-12 grade students with average or better grades in English.
FRENCH II - 1 credit
Grades 9,10,11,12
A grade of 78 or better in French I is recommended
Level: College Prep Challenge
The second level studies in French attempt to complete the student's mastery of basic language skills, which would enable him to compete successfully in collegiate study.
FRENCH III - 1 credit
Grades 9,10,11,12
A grade of 78 or better is recommended in French II or teacher recommendation
Level: College Prep Challenge
In the third level it is expected that the students develop a more spontaneous use of the language. Great attention is given to pronunciation and to a specific comprehension of material studied. Beginning literature is also studied.

Level: Honors Challenge
The fourth level objectives are to improve the student's skill mastery and to complete in French a literary anthology of French writers since the Middle Ages.
FRENCH V - 1 credit

A grade of 84 or better in French IV or teacher recommendation

The fifth level of French focuses on oral communication and writing skills. Upon completion of this course, students should be able to communicate in a French-speaking environment.
SPANISH I - 1 credit

Spanish I is designed to develop a basic knowledge of Spanish through work in the four language skills of listening, speaking, reading and writing. Recommended for all 9-12 grade students with average or better grades in English.
SPANISH II - 1 credit

Level: College Prep Challenge
Spanish II is a continuation of the first level course. It is designed for those students who have successfully completed one year of Spanish studies either in the middle school or in the high school. The students knowledge will be enhanced through work in the four skill areas of listening, speaking, reading and writing.
SPANISH III - 1 credit

A grade of 78 or better in Spanish II is recommended or teacher recommendation
Level: College Prep Challenge
This course is designed for those students who have completed Spanish II. Spanish III is a continuation of the second year's work with the aim of achieving fundamental competence in the four language skills.
SPANISH IV - 1 credit

A grade of "84" or better in Spanish III or teacher recommendation
Level: Honors Challenge
Spanish IV includes advanced work in the four language skills as well as emphasis on civilization, culture, literature and oral expression.
SPANISH V - 1 credit

Level: Honors Challenge
Spanish V is a proficiency-based course with a strong oral and aural emphasis. Students at the completion of this course should be able to function adequately in a Spanish-speaking environment.
ADVANCED PLACEMENT SPANISH - 1 credit
Grade 12

Level: Advanced Placement Challenge
Spanish VI is an advanced course with a conversation through literature emphasis. Students will enhance their knowledge of Spanish in the four skill areas of reading, writing, listening and speaking. This is an Advanced Placement course.
Students will be required to take the Advanced Placement exam in Spanish language. The cost of the exam will be covered by the school district.
GERMAN I - 1 credit

German I is an introduction to the basics of the German language. Some culture of the German-speaking people is integrated with the basic material. It is recommended for all 9-12 grade students with average or better grades in English.

The second level is a continuation into the study of German. There is practice in the four skills: reading, listening, writing and speaking.
GERMAN III - 1 credit

German III is an introduction to a second level textbook that will expand and refine communicative skills. Further emphasis will be on reading and comprehension.
GERMAN IV - 1 credit

Level: Honors Challenge
The main focus of study is placed on reading various selections of German reading material, starting with basic and progressing to more difficult. Graded material is based on vocabulary, idiom, grammatical form, sentence structure and thought content.

German V is a proficiency-based course exploring areas in the German language through literature and other reading materials.
