FAMILY & CONSUMER SCIENCES

 

FOODS - 1 credit                                                                                                      

Grades 9,10,11,12

 

Foods is the study of nutrition and the food guide pyramid as related to everyday eating patterns. The student will study diets, meal planning, food purchasing, advanced food preparation, and research and prepare foods from the regional United States and foreign countries. Labs for preparation of food are included. Foods is recommended for any student who will be planning, purchasing and preparing food for himself or for a family.

COOKING FOR INDEPENDENT LIVING - .5 credit                                                                     

Grade 9

This course will prepare the student with the basic skills for meal preparation. The student will study quick and easy meal planning and preparation techniques, microwave cooking, meals on the go and other cooking skills for living in the fast paced society.

 

PARENTING & FAMILY LIFE STUDIES - 1 credit                                                          

Grades 10,11,12

 

Parenting/Family Life Studies is designed to prepare the student for successful family living. The course will help the student acquire the skills and knowledge needed to prevent and solve common problems

 faced by individuals and families in the context of their emerging lives. The student will study parenting skills, the role of a parent, readiness for parenthood, prenatal development and care, caring for children, play and children and safety of children. The hands-on “World of Small Wonders” program is a part of this course. The course is recommended to all students who will be dealing with children in any capacity throughout their lives.

 

EARLY CHILDHOOD - 1 credit                                                                                           

Grades 9,10

 

This course is designed for students who are considering working with children. Students will explore different designs and types of child care programs and careers related to children. The course will focus on topics important to the study of children such as special needs children, creating safe environments and the effects of media and literature on children. Students will create and present hands-on developmentally appropriate activities and materials for young children.

 

CHILD DEVELOPMENT - 1 credit                                                                                 

Grades 10,11,12

 

Child Development is the study of the physical, emotional, social, and intellectual development of the child from birth to age five. This course will deal with guiding children's behavior, common problems with children, living with children under stress, the physically challenged child, and building a child's character. The “World of Small Wonders” experience is a part of this course with emphasis on observing children and relating the observations to child behavior.  Child development is recommended for males/females who will be working with children in any capacity or planning on someday becoming a parent.
