COMPUTER APPLICATIONS - 1 credit                                                                      

Grades 9,10,11,12

 

This course covers the Microsoft Office Suite. Microsoft Word – a word processor, and Microsoft Excel – a spreadsheet program, are two of the software packages students will learn. Using Microsoft Word, students will create, edit and format documents. Basic word processing skills through column layout and use of graphics are covered. Students create spreadsheets to analyze data, perform calculations and create charts. Two more applications, Microsoft Access - database management, and Microsoft PowerPoint – a computerized presentation program part of this course. Students learn to enter, edit, filter, and generate reports on information stored in Access. Using PowerPoint, the students first learn computer presentation techniques. These techniques are then applied to specific research topics. Both computer and oral presentation skill will be emphasized. Finally the integration of these applications to produce quality products is covered.

 

HTML & PAGE DESIGN - .5 credit

This introductory course in HTML authoring and design provides students with an opportunity to apply skills to static and dynamic projects relevant in today’s society. Through the use of generic text editors and Microsoft Front Page, students will study, design and apply structural concepts of basic to intermediate HTML design. Research, organization and presentation skills are essential components of this course. Ethical and related legal issues of web-based actions are also discussed during this one semester course. Students enrolled in this course will execute common academic routines and will complete work-intensive projects throughout the term.


MULTIMEDIA DESIGN AND APPLICATIONS - 1 credit

The Multimedia Design and Applications course provides students with the opportunity to learn and apply the latest standards of multimedia design. Course content includes applications of media with a focus on web-based content and management. HTML, DHTML, XHTML and CSS are used as active tools for web-based content. Software used in the course includes Macromedia Flash, Macromedia Dreamweaver, Macromedia Fireworks, and other modern software tools used in multimedia design.  Upon conclusion of the course, students will be able to design, author and edit static, dynamic and audible media relevant to a multitude of applications.

 

COMPUTER PROGRAMMING - 1 credit

This course is an introductory course in Visual Basic. This course is intended to provide familiarity with object-oriented computer languages. The process of defining a problem, breaking it down into a series of smaller problems and finally writing the code to solve it is followed. Logical thinking skills and correct programming techniques are emphasized.

 

Microsoft Office Specialist: Certification Program

 

Each Microsoft Office Specialist certificate for Microsoft Word 2002, Excel 2002, PowerPoint 2002 Access 2002, Outlook 2002 (Microsoft Office XP) has been recommended by the American Council on Education for one semester hour of lower division, college credit. This program is the globally recognized standard for demonstrating desktop skills with the Microsoft Office suite of business productivity. Wallenpaupack Area High School is an Approved Testing Center for the Microsoft Office Specialist Certification program.

 

MICROSOFT OFFICE 2002 WORD/EXCEL - 1 credit

This course is a study of word processing and spreadsheet skills using Microsoft Word 2002 and Excel 2002. Students will use Word 2002 to create professional documents with text, tables, graphics and forms. The focus of this course is for the students to master the competencies necessary to attain a Microsoft Office User Specialist: Microsoft Word 2002 certification. Using Microsoft Excel 2002 student will create, edit and manage a spreadsheet. Creating charts, automating, protecting and enhancing the spreadsheet data is also covered. The focus of this course is for a student to master the competencies necessary to attain a Microsoft Officer User Specialist: Microsoft Excel certificate.  Certification exams will be taken on site. A limited number of “free test vouchers” will be available; selection will be based on student performance.

This course is an introduction to database and presentation skills using Microsoft Access 2002 and PowerPoint 2002. Students will use Access 2002 to create, edit, format and manage databases.  Student will work with tables, forms and queries. The focus of this course is for students to master the competencies necessary to attain a Microsoft Office User Specialist: Microsoft Access certificate.  Using PowerPoint 2002 students will gain a foundation in creating and using presentations.  Editing and formatting text, working with graphic objects, inserting tables and charts and using visual and sound objects are all included in this course. The focus of this course is for a student to master the competencies necessary to attain a Microsoft Office User Specialist: PowerPoint certificate. Certification exams will be taken on site. A limited number of “free test vouchers” will be available; selection will be based on student performance

CompTIA Certification Prep Programs

 

These courses are for students interested in pursuing a career in Information Technology, a broad term covering all aspects of managing and processing information. IT specialists design, develop, support or manage computer software, hardware, the Internet and networks that tie it all together.

                                                                                                                                                                       

A+ CERTIFICATION – MICROCOMPUTER TECHNICIAN - 1 credit

During this one-semester course, students will take part in an interactive itinerary that focuses on various components of the personal computer. Cognitive and theoretical applications will allow students to focus their skills on troubleshooting, installing and configuring components of a typical PC. Among the topics to be explored are: Integral hardware, DOS Windows, basic networking, etc. This course curriculum has been designed as such to prepare students for successful completion of the CompTIA A+ Certification exam. A student may opt to take the A+ Certification exam off-site and at the student’s expense.

 

NETWORKING ESSENTIALS - 1 credit

This course provides students with an opportunity to learn about the interactive capabilities of computer networking. During this one semester course, students will install configure, customize, administer and troubleshoot various applications of assorted network types. Various network topologies, structures and operating systems will be studied. In addition to practical applications, theoretical design and implementation LANs and WANs will be studied. The core curriculum for this course is designed to prepare students for the CompTIA Net+ Certification exam. A student may opt to take the Certification exam off-site and at the student’s expense.

 

OPERATING SYSTEMS - 1 credit

Required: Satisfactory completion of Networking Essentials or A+ Microcomputer Technician

This course provides an opportunity for students to work in both a stand-alone environment and a networked environment. The focus of the course is on how to implement, configure, support and troubleshoot various operating systems. Student will gain experience in working with both the server and client side of Windows XP, NT, 2002 and NetWare.
