BUILDING CONSTRUCTION VOCATIONAL COURSE SEQUENCE

 

 

EXPLORING BUILDING CONSTRUCTION AND POWER MECHANICS - .5 credit                        

Grade 9

 

This elective course is designed to let the student explore and experience the Building Construction and Power Mechanics vocational programs. In order for a student to be admitted into either vocational program, he/she must take this elective course.

 

BUILDING CONSTRUCTION TRADES I & II                                                                 

Grades 10,11,12

Building Construction Trades I   2 credits

Building Construction Trades II - 2 credits

Required: Exploring Building Construction and Power Mechanics and submitted application. Space limited.

 

Building Construction Trades is a course of study recommended for a student who plans to pursue a career in residential building construction. The course offers training in four separate and distinct trade areas. They are masonry, carpentry, plumbing and electrical work. The student who successfully completes this two-year course will be exposed to each of these trades and should expect to gain employment in one of these areas at the entry level.

 

ADVANCED CONSTRUCTION SKILLS - 1 credit                                                                     

Grade 12

 

Students taking this course can expect to advance their skills in each of the four divisions of the building construction shop, with a large emphasis placed on live work projects being constructed in the shop.

 

RESIDENTIAL CARPENTRY - 1 credit                                                                          

Grades 10,11,12

 

This course is designed for the student who is interested in learning residential carpentry, theory and applications. Working with spruce, pine, and fir, the students will design, layout and construct a wide variety of different building components associated with residential carpentry. Hand and power tools will be used throughout the course for the construction of decks, steps, walls and rafters.  

 

HOME MAINTENANCE AND REPAIR - 1 credit                                                             

Grades 10,11,12

 

Home Maintenance and Repair is a hands-on intensive program intended for students who are not pursuing a career in the building trades. The student should want to obtain a working knowledge of home construction principles and theories while developing a skill level through manipulating materials and tools. The course is designed to include masonry, carpentry, wiring, and plumbing. Typical projects include masonry walls, paver patio & walkways, rough framing, finish carpentry, simple and complex wiring circuits, and basic plumbing installations and repair.

If you plan to own a home, you should make it a priority to take this course.

 

CAPSTONE WORK EXPERIENCE (Building Construction) - 2 credits                                      

Grade 12

Required: Successful completion of Level I & Level II Building Construction and instructor approval

A minimum of 15 hours of related work experience per week is required. Students taking this course can expect to advance their skills in the building construction industry.
