Grade 11 Guidance Announcements

As new opportunities become available they will be posted here.  Below are examples  from last year which we anticipate will be offered again this school year.

 State Police Youth Week

State Police Youth Week is  June 14-20, 2009

American Legion applications for Police week are available in the Guidance office.  The week long event offers a great opportunity for any 10th or 11th grade student interested in Law Enforcement, Law, or the Criminal Justice system. The application through the American Legion will allow consideration for sponsorship for the $125 week fee.

Students participate in a wide variety of instructional sessions with Local, State, and Federal Law Enforcement Agencies.  Sessions include training in forensic science, riot control, tactical drug operations, crime code, radar speed enforcement, used of police animals, weapons firing and other police related skills.

More information is available at their website:

Boys' and Girls' State

Students who have completed their Junior year are eligible to apply for either Boy's State or Girl's State.  The program is sponsored by the American Legion and is considered an extraordinary leadership program.  It is a definite positive to add to any college application, especially if you are interested in one of the Military Academies.

The application process starts during the Junior year so now is the time to start checking out this program.  Go to the American Legion's website for Boys' and Girls' State at:

http://www.boysandgirlsstate.org/

Because the American Legion sponsors the program the cost is usually minimal to attend and often free.  Boys' and Girls' State typically take place on a college campus during the summer.  Again it is just another great opportunity for your child to become involved and gain some important skills to compete in an ever more challenging market place and college pool.

Parents looking for an outstanding educational experience for your 10th or 11th grade student in the summer, the Pennsylvania Free Enterprise Week (PFEW) is a program you may want to consider. This program is a week long business and leadership program that takes place in Williamsport, PA about two and a half hours from Wallenpaupack on the Lycoming College and Penn College of Technology campuses.

In 2008 almost 1,800 students from across the state attended. The program is sponsored by many businesses and local community organizations in cooperation with the Pennsylvania Secretary of Education. This keeps the cost extremely low compared to similar programs. There is a $135 registration fee and you need to arrange you own transportation to and from the event. The fee covers room and board, instruction and all materials for the week and is only charged after you have been accepted and agree to attend the program. In addition to meeting and working with some of Pennsylvania's top executives you also get a chance to experience what it is like to live on a college campus for a week.

Take advantage of this opportunity as it would be a great experience for any student. Applications and information are available in the guidance office through Mr. Knisely, or you can go to the website below as well. If you have any further questions give Mr. Knisely a call.
