The Student Support Team at North Intermediate School offers the following support groups on an as needed basis throughout the school year. Groups generally meet during one period a week for approximately six weeks
BANANA SPLITS
Banana Splits provides a safe and confidential setting for students, to assist those students who are experiencing adjustment difficulties associated with the separation or divorce of their parents. "Banana Splits" activities and discussions will focus on helping the children feel more comfortable in expressing their feelings and coping with them.
FRIENDSHIP GROUP
This support group strives to help students improve their self-esteem and develop positive peer relationships. Goals include identifying personal strengths and interests, increasing self-confidence and helping the students learn appropriate ways of resolving conflict.
STOP & THINK
Goals of this group are to help the students improve their listening skills and to practice following directions. Some activities also focus on conflict resolution and self-control.
STRESS BUSTERS
Stress Busters seeks to help students develop better coping skills to deal with everyday stresses. Some of the group's goals include improving social interaction, developing better self-control and encouraging appropriate responses to stressful situations.
KIDS CLUB
Kids Club helps the students identify personal strengths and interests, improve their self-esteem, develop better overall coping skills, and cultivate positive relationships. Activities will also address self- esteem issues, stress management and peer pressure.
SUNSHINE CLUB
This group assists those students who are grieving the loss of a loved one by providing a warm and supportive atmosphere where they can share the feelings of anger and loss they can expect to experience during the healing process
CONCERNED PERSONS
Concerned Persons provides a confidential atmosphere to assist those students who are experiencing adjustment difficulties associated with substance abuse on the part of a family member.
ANGER MANAGEMENT
Designed for students who have difficulty expressing their feelings in an appropriate way. Activities focus on teaching students to recognize signs of anger and helps them develop better coping strategies. Impulse control, problem solving and self-esteem are also stressed
COWS - CHILDREN OF WAR
A support group for students who have a family member in active military service and/or deployed. Students will learn various coping skills.
