Wallenpaupack Rolls Into the New Year with 3rd place Finish at Christmas City Tournament

Jared Wehrmann - No longer on Jr. High - the Freshman 4-2 at Becca to capture 5th place.

Wallenpaupack traveled to the traditional wrestling stronghold of District 11 over the Christmas break to battle some of the best teams in the country including tournament host Bethlehem Catholic, who is currently ranked 12th in the country.  The Bucks used strong showing from their upper weights and solid performances to capture some team hardware for the first time in any individual tournament edging out Southern Lehigh by just a half point 114.5 to 114 for the 3rd place award in a field of 22 teams.

The Buckhorns used 15 pins and 2 technical falls to accumulate big bonus points to go with advancement and place points in the brackets.  As usual Wallenpaupack brought a very well rounded team and relied on points from all members to amass the necessary points to stay ahead of the crowd

Senior Victor Steffen was the top finisher for the Buckhorns finishing 2nd at 220 lbs. after dropping a tough overtime bout to Krailk Kane of Palmerton.  Victor’s record is currently 12-2 with his only two losses coming to the state ranked Kane (#12) and Wyalusing’s Dylan Otis (#18).

Fellow senior Pat Ingulli was the other Buckhorn to wrestle in the tournament’s final round and earned 3rd place.  Pat’s final round win earned the Bucks 2 points which proved to be the difference between 3rd and 4th place in the team competition.  Pat’s record is now 10-3 and he continues to move closer to becoming Wallenpaupack’s first 100 match winner.

Christmas City Tournament Continued

Chase Gallik moves up to face varsity competition this year as a freshman.

The Wehrmann family pulled in two 5th place finishes.  Ethan went 4-2 in the tournament and picked up three falls to earn the 5th place finish.  Ethan runs his record up to 11-3 on the season and leads the team with 8 falls.  Jared, Ethan’s freshman brother, rebounded after a first round loss to go 4-2 and finish 5th as well.  Jared is one of the big surprises in the Buckhorn lineup this year and current leads the team with 12-2 record going into league action.

Wallenpaupack’s other place finisher was Garrett Zeiler, who went 3-3 to finish in 6th place.  Garrett carries a 10-4 record and follows only Ethan with 6 falls.

Getting his first opportunity to start Chance Wallace brought some much needed help to the Bucks 138 lb. class.  Chance went 3-2 on the weekend recording 3 falls.  He is expected to improve each week and looks ready to sink his teeth into the season.  Mike Pagalich came very close to placing when he lost in overtime to William Allen’s Brandon Vigo who went on to place 3rd.  Mike went 2-2 on the weekend.  Also winning two matches for the Bucks was Dan Caplette as he continues to try to get into mid season form.  Wallenpaupack also got victories from Chase Gallik, Nick Demchuk, Ryan Egger, Ryan Tarantino, and Adam Newcomer.

It was an outstanding performance from a squad that starts 10 wrestlers that never had a varsity match until this season.  After losing so many senior from last year’s team it looked like the cupboard was bare.  The team is still able to start 7 varsity wrestlers and it appears they have something to prove before the season is over.  With their performance over the Christmas break they are well on their way to doing just that.
