First Grade Curriculum

What your child will learn:

Communications

Communications is a broad term for reading, writing and spelling. Your child will be involved in reading many books in small and large group settings. One of the best ways you can help your child improve his/her reading skills is to read to or with him/her every night. Just 5-10 minutes each day can make a big difference!

Your child will also be doing KidWriting. Much of the writing your child will do will deal with his/her own experiences. He/She will keep a journal to write about things that he/she enjoys and experiences he/she has during the school year. Your child is expected to print letters using correct size, proportion, spacing and alighment.

The Spelling program formally begins in January. It consists of review and introduction of 35 high frequency words that your child should master by the end of the year. Mastery means that the words are always spelled correctly in everyday writing.

Your child is also expected to be able to identify all of the words in the First Grade Word List by the end of his/her first grade year. You may click on the following link and print out the list so that you can practice the words at home - FIRST GRADE WORD LIST
