Planned Objectives for 2007-2008 School Year

Since I teach 6th, 7th, and 8th grade students, the curriculum I teach changes each school year.  When you click on the subject area of your choice below, you will see an overview for the current school year.
Reading  English  Mathematics  Science  Social Studies

 Reading:

There are several levels of readers in this course, therefore there are several different reading programs in use.  The two most prevelant programs are Edmark Reading, and SRA Corrective Reading.  Edmark Reading teaches students to memorize words that they commonly see in text, while SRA Corrective Reading uses phonemic awareness to teach student to decode words.  Both programs make use of small groups of no more than 5, and students work directly with a teacher.
The main goal of both programs is to develop decoding skills to increase the speed at which the student can read.  According to experts in the field, once a student can read fluently, he or she will then be able to understand the content of what is read.  This is why fluency skills are such a large focal point of the classroom.
Student progress is monitored weekly through use of the DIBELS Toolkit.  This assessment measures how many words a student can read in a 1 minute interval at his or her academic level.  It also tracks the amount of errors the student makes while reading.  The data is then graphed, and available for parent viewing at any time.  If at any time, the teacher notices that the student is not making progress, he will determine if interventions are needed to correct the issue.
Grades on student report cards reflect an average of individual and group participation, homework, fluency scores, and weekly comprehension skills excercises.

 English:

Students complete weekly writing prompts which are graded in accordance to the Pennsylvania State Writing Rubric.  These standards are adapted to reflect growth at the student's academic ability level.  Students will proofread and identify mistakes in written work on a daily basis.  Students will also be introduced to nouns, verbs, adjectives, conjunctions, pronouns, and other basic parts of speech.  Students must complete a spelling unit each week in which they work on understanding the relationships of word families, dictionary skills, and formulating sentences and inserting words in the appropriate context.  Grades on student report cards will reflect an average grade of all of the above material.

 Mathematics:

Mathematics instruction will follow a similiar format throughout the year.  Students work in small groups no larger than 8 people.  In these groups, students will be exposed to the following areas:

~Problem Solving Practice (Throughout year, word problem practice)
~Rounding
~Decimals
~Fractions
~Place Value
~Perimeter, Area, and Volume
~Measurement

~Basic Geometry

Progress will be graphed for both computational skills, as well as comprehension skills on a bi-weekly basis.  The grades on student report cards will reflect an averaged grade of scores from homework, classwork, quizes, tests, and demonstrations of tasks.
