Fräulein Leibel’s Expectations of her Students

Students will come to class prepared each day.

This means they will have all their materials (Notebook, Pencil, Book, Workbook), and will have any homework assignment completed (this also includes studying).

Students will participate in class each day.

This means they will complete in-class assignments, take notes, participate in class discussions, answer questions, and practice speaking German.  Participation is part of the student grade.  Students each week will receive up to 3 points for class participation and preparation.  Also, if a student is distracting others from learning he/she may lose a point.  Occasionally there will be other short assignments that will be a part of participation.

3 points - Always Prepared and Participated Daily

2 point – Mostly Prepared and Participated Often

1 point – Rarely Prepared and/or Rarely Participated

0 points- Never Prepared and/or Never Participated

Students will be assigned homework regularly.

In order to learn another language practice is key, therefore we will usually have homework 4 times a week.  Sometimes a homework assignment will be to study, and it will be noticeable who does study and who chooses not to study. Homework will often be graded.

Students will take a weekly quiz.

Every Thursday the students will have a quiz on the vocabulary words we have learned. Sometimes we may have short quizzes on other concepts that we have covered, these quizzes will also be announced.

Students who are absent are responsible to make up their work.

If a student is absent, when he/she returns to class he/she should check the “class absent binder” to see what was missed and pick up any worksheets.  Then he/she should ask a classmate to see if any notes were taken, and if so then copy them.  Finally, if the student is confused about what was missed he/she should ask the teacher.

Students should seek help from teacher if they are confused.

If a student is having difficulty, he/she should ask questions during/after/before class.  The student should not wait until 5 minutes before a test or quiz to seek extra help.

Students will be respectful to themselves, each other, and the teacher.

I have zero tolerance for students being mean, rude, disrespectful, or behaving like a bully.  I want students to feel safe and comfortable in my classroom, so that they are not afraid to participate and make mistakes.

Students will follow normal school rules.

The students, by now, should be aware of what these rules are.  Check your Middle School handbook if you forget.  For Example:  Students must have their bathroom passes if they want to use the bathroom during my class.  No chewing gum.

Students are expected to do their best work and put forth their best effort.

This will be totally different than any other class the students have taken.  Everything will be new, and it will require a lot of practice and memorization.  If the students try their best and follow the above, they should have no problem!

Students will be graded based on the following:

          1/3 Test

          1/3 Quizzes

          1/3 Homework/Participation/Preparation

Students will have fun learning German!
